POLIMERISASI GRAFTING ASAM METAKRILAT PADA SELULOSA ONGGOK DAN UJI AKTIFITASNYA SEBAGAI POLIMER PEKA pH

Abstract


In an attempt to develop more economic usage of cassava solid waste found in abundance in the Province of Lampung, the cellulose extracted from the waste was functionalized with polymethacrylic acid (polyMAA) to obtain pH-responsive polymer. The functionalization was carried out using grafting technique using Cerium (IV) ion as an initiator and MAA as a monomer.  Analysis of the sample using FTIR spectroscopic technique revealed that the polyMAA were well grafted onto the cellulose as indicated by the presence of absorption band at 1710 cm-1, assigned to carbonyl group of the MAA.  The results indicate that the percentage of grafting increases with increased concentration of initiator as well as the concentration of monomer.  The pH-resposnive of produced polymer was tested with water absorbtion experiment at pH 4 and 8, and revealed that absorption capacity of the polymer was higher at pH of 8.  It was also observed the the sensitivity of the polymer is linearly proportional with the percentage of grafting.
