APLIKASI MathCad DAN SAS UNTUK MENYELESAIKAN KOMPOSISI KESEIMBANGAN TERMODINAMIKA

Abstract


Equilibrium composition of a reaction is of interest for applications in chemical industries.  It is well known that the yield of a reaction will be optimum at the equilibrium condition where the total Gibbs free energy is zero.  The equilibrium composition, therefore, can be estimated by applying Gibb’s free energy model.  The problem is that total Gibbs free energy will be such a non linear equation that is difficult to solve.  Solving the equation manually is a time consuming process. On the other hand, some dedicated packages of computer program are highly costly. The paper discusses the use of common softwares, such as MathCad and SAS, to predict equilibrium chemical composition of a reaction. MathCad codes were made to calculate gas yield from water gas shift reaction and steam reforming glycerol, whereas SAS codes were used for syngas upgrading. The results showed that using that softwares, simple codes could be effectively built to solve the problem. The experience also showed that SAS program is more powerful and is quite simpler.
